The short answer
A solar panel cleaning robot for a UAE site costs from about $19,500 for a portable, operator-deployed cleaner for rooftop and commercial arrays, based on HORMĒ's indicative prices in US dollars before VAT, installation and integration. Row-mounted waterless systems for utility-scale plants are priced per megawatt and quoted on request. A thermographic survey drone, which finds the faults cleaning cannot fix, is listed from about $34,000. Running a machine under the HORMĒ behavior platform adds a monthly licence, normally $149 per machine for cleaning and energy work.

Why cleaning pays in the Gulf
Dust is the largest avoidable loss on a Gulf solar plant. Researchers at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute measured an average soiling rate of 0.49% of daily energy yield per day for fixed-tilt modules, which adds up to about 13% in an average month without rain or cleaning (PV Tech, 2023). Worldwide, the IEA Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme estimates that soiling costs 4 to 7% of energy (IEA PVPS Tasks 13 and 16 fact sheet, 2025).
The arithmetic is simple. A plant that would generate 100 MWh in a month and is left uncleaned at that rate gives up about 13 MWh. Multiply the lost energy by your tariff or power purchase price and you have the monthly budget that cleaning has to beat. Rain does little of the work here, so the choice is between crews with water and brushes, and machines.
What decides the price
- Plant size and layout: long, uniform ground-mounted rows suit a row-mounted system that stays on the array. Rooftops broken up by walkways, parapets and equipment suit a portable robot that an operator carries from row to row.
- Water: a waterless system removes the cost of trucking and treating water on a desert site, and the risk of mineral deposits from hard water. It costs more to install and is priced by plant capacity.
- Autonomy: a row system that cleans every night on its own needs no crew. A portable robot is cheaper to buy but needs an operator on site for each clean.
- Cleaning rate: the SolarCleano portable cleaner covers up to 800 m² an hour. A 1 MWp array has roughly 4,800 m² of modules at about 21% module efficiency, so one machine can cover it in around six hours of cleaning time at that rate.
- Power: the Ecoppia row system is self-powered, so it needs no site supply.
- Tracker or fixed tilt: trackers, row gaps and module framing all affect how a row system is fitted, which is why it is quoted per plant.
What else to budget for
- Platform licence: cleaning and energy machines on a known route normally run on the Core tier at $149 per machine per month, which includes the unified fleet map, scheduled and triggered task assignment, alerting and utilization reporting. Fleet rates apply above twenty machines. See HORMĒ pricing.
- Installation and commissioning: row systems are fitted to the mounting structure; portable robots need operator training and a transport plan between roofs or blocks.
- Approvals: HORMĒ completes TDRA type approval and ECAS conformity before shipment and hands the documents over with the equipment. Drones also fall under civil aviation rules. See importing robots into the UAE.
- Spares and service: brushes and other wear parts are consumables. HORMĒ holds wear parts and critical spares in the UAE, with factory-certified service engineers resident in the country.
- VAT and import: prices exclude UAE VAT.
- Pilot: most deployments start with a paid 90-day pilot, with measured results before the fleet order.
Cleaning robot or survey drone?
They answer different questions. A cleaning robot recovers yield lost to dust. A thermographic survey drone finds yield lost to faults: hot spots, failed strings and damaged modules that stay underperforming however clean the glass is. The drone HORMĒ lists reports yield loss mapped to inverter and string, so a maintenance team knows where to go. Large plants usually need both, and a survey before and after a cleaning programme is the cleanest way to measure what the cleaning recovered.
Buy or lease?
Leasing is cheaper to start but costs more to hold. On HORMĒ's whole-site cost modelling, the two cross over at around month twenty. A solar plant runs for decades, so owners and long-term O&M contractors usually buy. Leasing suits a contractor covering a fixed-term cleaning contract.
Delivery time
The SolarCleano portable cleaner is listed at 10 to 14 weeks and the thermographic survey drone at 8 to 12 weeks. Typical delivery across the HORMĒ catalogue is 8 to 16 weeks to a UAE site. An order placed in October usually lands in the first quarter from Asian and Israeli suppliers; European platforms arrive in the second quarter. Equipment is qualified for 50 °C ambient.
How to choose
- Villa and small commercial rooftops: a robot is rarely justified for a single small array. A cleaning contractor with a portable robot serving many roofs is the usual model.
- Malls, warehouses, factories and car-park canopies: a portable robot, owned by the facilities team or the O&M contractor.
- Utility-scale ground-mounted plants: a row-mounted waterless system that cleans nightly, with a survey drone for periodic fault finding.
- Mixed fleets: if cleaning robots and drones have to be scheduled alongside other machines on the same site, see robot fleet management across vendors.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a solar panel cleaning robot cost in the UAE?
HORMĒ lists the SolarCleano portable cleaning robot from $19,500 indicative, in US dollars before VAT, installation and integration. Row-mounted waterless systems for utility-scale plants are priced per megawatt on request, and a thermographic survey drone is listed from $34,000.
Do solar panel cleaning robots use water?
It depends on the type. The row-mounted Ecoppia system HORMĒ lists is waterless and cleans every night on its own power. Portable operator-deployed robots are carried between rows and are used on rooftop and commercial arrays.
How much energy does dust cost a solar plant in the Gulf?
Researchers at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute measured an average soiling rate of 0.49% of daily energy yield per day for fixed-tilt modules in Qatar, which adds up to about 13% in an average month without rain or cleaning. The IEA PVPS programme puts global soiling losses at 4 to 7% of energy.
Is there a monthly fee for a solar cleaning robot?
The machine is a one-off purchase. Running it under the HORMĒ behavior platform is licensed per machine per month. Cleaning and energy machines on a known route normally sit on the Core tier at $149 per machine per month.
How long does delivery take to the UAE?
HORMĒ lists the SolarCleano portable cleaner at 10 to 14 weeks and the thermographic survey drone at 8 to 12 weeks. Typical delivery across the catalogue is 8 to 16 weeks to a UAE site.
Which is better for a rooftop: a portable robot or a row system?
A portable robot. Row-mounted systems are built for long, uniform rows on utility-scale plants. Rooftop and commercial arrays are broken up by walkways, parapets and equipment, so an operator-deployed robot that is carried between rows fits them better.
